World Oceans Day activities from across OSU 

Officially recognized by the UN General Assembly in 2008, World Oceans Day is a global celebration of the ocean held every June 8th.
It is meant to raise awareness of the ocean’s importance and the many issues it faces. The World Oceans Day 2020 theme is Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean. OSU reflects and celebrates innovation in countless ways. This year, the Marine Studies Initiative is celebrating by showcasing a variety of inspiring World Ocean Day/Week events, educational activities, videos, podcasts and more!

World Oceans Day Virtual Event

The United Nations celebrates World Oceans Day every year on 8 June. The groundswell grows each year, as countries and communities use this day to celebrate all the ocean gives us. This year’s theme is “Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean.” We invite you to join us on Monday, June 8 at 6:00 PM for a special OSU Science Pub World Oceans Day Virtual Event. This evening event will feature a screening of Oregon State Productions’ Heceta Bank and a companion short OSU produced film, guest Q&A panel, trivia, art, music, and a special reading of a children’s ocean storybook. Innovation in underwater science – how a simple camera transformed the scientific diving community

Shortly after the advent of commercially available SCUBA diving equipment in the 1960s, scientists took a giant stride forward in our understanding of ocean environments. Before SCUBA diving, we could only get a glimpse of the underwater world via organisms and habitats that were brought to the surface. After the creation of SCUBA diving equipment, we could now enter this world and see these environments first-hand.
