The Hatfield campus, located in Newport, Oregon, gives Oregon State University students the opportunity to study at the sea and take full course loads while at the coast.

Over the past 50 years, the Hatfield campus in Newport has built its reputation as one of the world’s leading marine laboratories, known for collaborative research and a vast array of experiential learning opportunities including courses and a thriving summer internship program. 

Students from all over the country gather at the Hatfield campus to learn about issues related to the coasts and ocean. From first-year undergraduate experiences through graduate school, there are opportunities to live and learn at the coast while earning credits toward your degree.

Are you from another school?  We look forward to meeting you in Oregon! Many schools have tuition and credit transfer agreements with OSU. Talk with your advisor and contact us for more information.

Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building

The new Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building offers spaces for students with different disciplines to innovate, collaborate, and create. Here are some key features about this state-of-the-art building.

  • Innovation Lab- The Innovation lab (iLab) includes equipment for electromechanical design, CNC and manual machining, welding and fabrication; 3D design, modeling, printing, and laser cutting; audio and video systems to support innovation in the marine sciences.
  • Artist Studio- The Artist Studio provides artists and scientists a collaborative workspace to explore the passion of the marine world in new ways.
  • Vertical evacuation- The building is engineered to be a vertical evacuation structure with supplies on the rooftop to support over 920 people for up to two days post a Cascadia-level event.
  • Ultralife Café- Ultralife Café offers coffee, lunch, and snacks featuring local food.
  • Auditorium- A 250 seat auditorium for lectures, music, and performing arts.

Housing at Hatfield campus

Apply for housing early! Shared apartments with cooking facilities are available at Hatfield campus. Although not currently available, housing scholarships may become available for registered students to help partially defer housing costs. Learn more about housing HERE

Housing Scholarships:

Cecil and Martha MacGregor Scholarship in Marine Science

This scholarship is given to up to four students. Each award of $250 goes to cover housing expenses for undergraduate OSU student(s) taking coursework during summer and in residence at Hatfield campus. Application deadline: May 31.

MSI Student Awards

Can cover field housing expenses for undergraduate students who demonstrate outstanding scholarship and pursuits consistent with the transdisciplinary, collaborative, experiential learning and outreach vision and mission of Marine Studies Initiative. Application deadline:  May 2.

Due to COVID-19 distancing protocols, Hatfield campus's housing is running at a limited capacity for the spring and summer of 2022, but space is still available for students and interns. Housing residents are required to comply with university event testing and vaccination requirements.

Internships are typically short-term work assignments related to your major or career interests. Completing an internship is an excellent way to develop the hands-on skills and professionalism needed for a successful transition into the work place.

Student Life

The Hatfield campus is a lively, diverse, welcoming community.

Recreational activities- Many recreational activities are available at Hatfield (e.g., kayaking, fishing, volleyball, crabbing, clamming, and basketball), at the Newport Recreational Center (gym, pool, exercise classes; passes available), and in the surrounding areas (surfing, hiking, paddle boarding, mountain biking, whale watching, fishing, disc golf, etc).

Food and drink- Local restaurants host regular events, such as local live music. Many restaurants serve fresh and local seafood. Visit the weekly Newport Farmers Market every Saturday for high-quality locally grown produce, meats, and crafts.

Art, culture, and museums- The Oregon Coast Aquarium is steps away from the Hatfield campus and offers exhibits focused on the flora and fauna native to the Oregon Coast along with other marine species from around the world.  

Student Clubs- The Ocean11 marine club and the Hatfield Student Organization provide engagement opportunities outside the classroom that support social, recreational, intellectual, and personal development opportunities for students.
