Offshore Wind Energy in Oregon: A Second OSU Campus-Wide Discussion

What's happening? How might it impact your research? What role is OSU playing?

During the recent session, which took place on May 3, 2023, at the MU Horizon Room, approximately 120 faculty and students from across campus convened
to receive updates on current Off Shore Wind activities across the nation, learn the roles
OSU is actively engaged in, and discussed ways to synergize existing and future
efforts to maximize benefits and lessen negative impacts.

BRYSON ROBERTSON

Associate Professor, Oregon State University and Director of the Pacific Marine Energy Center  

Dr. Robertson's research and teaching interests include the wave mechanics, hydrodynamics of floating bodies and mooring systems, and renewable energy. Working with partners in industry and the US National Laboratories, he is focussed on wave, tidal and offshore wind energy resource characteristics; the co-design and modeling of hydrodynamically active offshore wind and wave renewable technologies; and numerically integrating marine power within the emerging Blue Economy. His research utilizes field measurements, hydrodynamic multi-body numerical models, and physical prototype build/test. Prior to coming to OSU, he spent five years working at the University of Victoria and consulting for marine energy companies. In complimentary research, Dr. Robertson also looks at the future of our global energy systems; the nexus of technology, climate change, policy, economics and society on the decarbonization of electrical systems; and the public trust requirements to transition power system. His research has been funded by the DOE, Navy, the State of Oregon and National Science and Engineering Council of Canada.

 

 

 

 

 

SARAH HENKEL

Associate Professor, Department of Integrative Biology, Oregon State University, Associate Director of the Pacific Marine Energy Center at Oregon State University and benthic ecologist at the Hatfield Marine Science Center 

Dr. Sarah Henkel is a benthic ecologist at the Hatfield Marine Science Center, an associate professor in the Department of Integrative Biology, and Associate Director of the Pacific Marine Energy Center at Oregon State University. Her research interests broadly address potential effects of human activities (e.g. marine renewable energy installations, marine reserve designations, fishing, invasive species, climate change) on seafloor habitats and species. She received her B.S. from the College of William and Mary, her master’s degree from California State University, Fullerton, and her PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Before moving to OSU, Sarah worked at the California Ocean Science Trust working on projects related to invasive species, oil platform decommissioning, and marine protected areas.


 

 

CHRIS POTTER

Senior Environmental Scientist, recently retired from the State of California; currently a Graduate Student at OSU in the Energy Policy Certificate program

Chris Potter recently retired from the state of California as a Senior Environmental Scientist.  Most recently he worked for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Marine Region where he participated in the environmental review of major energy related development projects. Prior to working for the Department of Fish and Wildlife, Chris was the Marine Renewable Energy Program Manager for the California Ocean Protection Council and coordinator of the state Marine Renewable Energy Working Group.  In addition to working for state government, Chris has many years of experience working for private environmental consulting firms.  His educational background at both the undergraduate and graduate level includes natural resources, environmental science and engineering.  Chris is currently a graduate student at OSU in the Energy Policy Certificate program.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

HILARY BOUDET

 
Associate Professor & Associate Director of Graduate Programs, 
School of Public Policy, Oregon State University

Hilary Boudet is an Associate Professor and Associate Director of Graduate Programs at the School of Public Policy at Oregon State University. Her research interests include environmental and energy policy, natural resource sociology, social movements, and public participation in energy and environmental decision-making. She has written extensively on public perceptions of and community response to emerging energy technologies, publishing two books and over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles on these and other topics. Her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the Department of Energy. She holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering and political science from Rice University and a PhD in environment and resources from Stanford University.
