Marine-Related Intern Projects

Over the summer, our summer interns worked hard on creating projects addressing different marine-related topics, researching and then creating presentations and posters on the information they found. Explore videos of their presentations below!

Alec Youngblood

Alec Youngblood Summer 2019 Internship Presentation

Alec Youngblood (Summer Coastal Tourism), a fisheries and wildlife student, worked on conducting the 2019 evaluation of online presence and pricing of guided tour operators on the Oregon Coast. This entailed a survey of google search results and a subsequent data analysis of the data collected. As well as creating presentation materials (poster, fact sheet, lightning talk, and 15-minute presentation), redesigning the project survey protocols and google form, and applying for a grant with the Oregon Coast Visitors Association (OCVA).  Alec said the internship helped him develop personal and professional skills like networking, time-management (both in planning out a 10-week project and in daily task management),applied literature review/research, applied data analysis, disseminating scientific information in an easily digestible format, and grant writing.

Griffin Thoms

Grifffin Thoms Summer 2019 Internship Presentation

Griffin Thoms (Engineering), a mechanical engineering student, worked on and improved an existing core that is used to get samples out of mud flats or soft sediment. improving upon previous designs and making his own, and fixing problems, came up with solutions together with his mentor and then implemented them. Griffin says the internship helped him develop personal and professional skills, from working independently and figuring out what needs to get done. Bailey Burk Summer 2019 Internship Presentation

Bailey Burke (Education, Communication, & Policy), a microbiology student, worked on a research project about public perception of red rock crab on the Oregon coast, designed a survey, spent several weeks interviewing crabbers, and produced outreach material that targets some common misconceptions about red rock crab. In addition, helped the agency with collecting feedback about potential sport crab gear marking rules. As well as helping set up and presenting at a public meeting about sport crab gear rules. Bailey says the internship helped her develop personal and professional skills from watching how coworkers interact, how collaboration on projects happens, and how supervisors interact with their employees. She also says she gained a lot of confidence by interviewing members of the public and taking their comments/feedback/complaints about crab management constructively.

Mia Arvizu

Mia Arvizu (Whale Ecology), an environmental science student, worked on a research project documenting the correlation between sea urchin abundance and kelp health. This required a lot of data processing, tracking whales from a cliff site, photographing whales for identification purposes, kayaking to collect prey samples, and leading/mentoring two high school interns. As well as helping grad student, Lisa Hildebrand, with the field work portion for her masters thesis. Mia says the internship helped her develop skills on how to communicate about expectations professionally. As well as the opportunity to learn her limits, what to expect from herself and how to express that to others.
