Join us to help design a center for seafood systems and innovation!

Nearly 100 state, regional, national, and international experts came together for a workshop May 14‐16, 2018, in Newport, Oregon, to further develop a framework for a program centered around seafood systems and innovation at Oregon State University. The workshop provided opportunities for participants to tour local facilities related to wild fisheries and aquaculture production.

Meeting documents: Visit our workshop documents page for summary, materials, and speaker information.

Keynote speakers on the future of seafood

  • Richard (Rick) Spinrad, OSU Professor of Oceanography and former NOAA Chief Scientist and OSU Vice President for Research
  • Carol Sanford, speaker and author of The Regenerative Business, Executive in Residence and Senior Fellow in Social Innovation at Babson College, and recipient of the Thought Leader Lifetime Achievement Award from Trust Across America‐Trust Around the World
  • Thor Sigfusson, Founder and Chairman of the Iceland Ocean Cluster

Other workshop features:

  • Highly interactive “Ignite” sessions of dynamic, short presentations followed by small group work to focus on key elements of a food systems approach to seafood and how a university‐based center could provide expertise and leadership on topics such as:
  • improving system efficiencies,
  • promoting and conserving wild fisheries and aquaculture,
  • increasing value in the food system, and
  • training current and future workforces.
  • Panels of seafood leaders from a diversity of backgrounds in research, education, and supply chains share their visions about the future and major issues for a center to meaningfully address.
  • Research and culinary chefs from Oregon will share their perspectives and seafood creations throughout the workshop.
