At the center of this development is the construction of a state-of-the-art, $50 million facility in Newport. Adjacent to the internationally respected Hatfield Marine Science Center on the Yaquina Bay, the facility will connect Oregon State students to world-class research facilities just steps from the Pacific Ocean.
This new facility will enable OSU to increase its teaching and research capacity by 20-25 faculty members. Together, these faculty and researchers will prepare the next generation of leaders in marine studies, with 500 students-in-residence across multiple disciplines studying throughout the year in Newport.
The Fund for Innovation provides much-needed unrestricted support for the Marine Studies Initiative. Unrestricted funds are critically important for the growth and development of this new initiative. They allow for important strategic planning opportunities, provide faculty and undergraduate research opportunities, and provide flexibility for MSI to take advantage of emerging opportunities.
The Earth's ocean absorbs about a quarter of the carbon dioxide we release into the atmosphere every year, so as atmospheric CO2 levels increase, so do the levels in the ocean. Initially, many scientists focused on the benefits of the ocean removing this greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. However, decades of ocean observations worldwide now show that there is also a downside — the CO2 absorbed by the ocean is changing the chemistry of the seawater, a process called ocean acidification.
The Wendy and Eric Schmidt Marine Studies Fund supports research, education, and communication of ocean acidification and its effects.
Dungeness crab is an important part of the Northwest’s seafood heritage, and has been commercially harvested since the 1800’s. The Dungeness crab fishery is Oregon’s most valuable ‘single species’ fishery. Eder Family Fund for Dungeness Crab Research supports research related to Dungeness crab and/or its fishery.
